I'm an artist, designer, educator, curator and speaker
Hi! I'm Gloria. I'm very passionate about visual arts, art-making and digitally designing whenever I can. I love to create art, show art and teach this to those who are also passionate about it.
Gloria Carnevale is an artist, designer, educator, curator and speaker who has lived and worked in Shenzhen since 2012. She is a founding member of ISZAF (International Shenzhen Artist Forum) and is currently the Co-Chair. Gloria works as the Head of Visual Arts and Design at the International School of Nanshan Shenzhen (ISNS). She teaches senior level visual arts courses and is also qualified to teach design and technology. Gloria holds degrees in visuals arts (BFA, Mount Allison University), Design (Sheridan Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning) and education (B.Ed., Brock University), and has worked as an educational and design industry professional for years.
My artwork consists of mainly printmaking and photographic compositions. I often use these two forms together and they are very evident in my process. I begin photographing my surroundings, and then digitally manipulate the photographs to create images that I use as the basis for my prints. I often use the printmaking process of monoprinting, where I only create one print, instead of editions of multiples. I make variations of a concept that are similar, but never the same. I use repetition to create the feeling and effect that I want to communicate.
I believe that “Identity” gives meaning to an object or person that makes it different from everyone and everything else: it is seen as an independent variable that belongs to a certain person, or to a group of people. My work explores many themes surrounding the concept of identity, such as how relationships and surroundings collaborate to identify a person. I enjoy incorporating both serious and satirical elements into my work. I also like to manipulate repetition, bold colours and textures.
